Thiruvananthapuram: In the latest development, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has begun interrogating former Devaswom Board president A Padmakumar, as the Sabarimala gold theft investigation increasingly focuses on him. Indications suggest that his arrest may take place soon.

The SIT has assessed that it was Padmakumar who supported Unnikrishnan Potti, the first accused in the case. The team has also reportedly received indications of financial dealings between Potti and Padmakumar. According to SIT sources, the delay in arresting Padmakumar is due to ongoing evidence-collection related to these matters.

It is understood that the statements of those previously arrested in the Sabarimala gold theft case point towards Padmakumar. From Sabarimala former officials Murari Babu to N Vasu, the accused have reportedly given statements implicating him. There are also indications that their statements claim the gold was melted down and converted into copper on “Padmakumar’s instruction”. The SIT is examining Padmakumar’s financial sources in detail.

Padmakumar had earlier been issued two summonses by the SIT to appear for questioning in connection with the case. The second notice was issued after the arrest of former Devasom Board Commissioner N Vasu. Following this, it became evident that the investigation would now be centred on Padmakumar. At the time N Vasu served as Devaswom Board Commissioner, Padmakumar had been the Board’s president.

Those arrested so far in the Sabarimala gold theft case include Unnikrishnan Potti, former Devaswom Board Administrative Officer Murari Babu, former Executive Officer D Sudheesh Kumar and former Devaswom commissioner and president N Vasu.
