Kollam Corporation’s ‘Good Morning Kollam’ initiative, aimed at offering nutritious breakfast at just ₹10, is gaining widespread acceptance among the public, particularly benefiting everyday citizens who struggle with rising food costs.

The scheme is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: feeding people without emptying their pockets. Breakfast is available for only ₹10 per person, supported by a ₹10 lakh budget allocated from the Corporation’s development fund.

Due to its success, the Corporation is now considering expanding the initiative by opening more counters at locations like Shaktikulangara and Anchalummoodu.

Currently, breakfast is served from a counter near the Chinnakkada bus bay between 7.00 am and 9.30 am, though timing may vary depending on how quickly food runs out. Kollam is reportedly the first city in the state to launch such a breakfast programme at this price point.

Meals are prepared and served by members of the Sneha Theeram Kudumbashree unit, a women-led self-help group. The ₹10 collected from each customer goes directly to the Kudumbashree workers. On top of that, the Corporation contributes an additional ₹30 per meal, ensuring both affordability for the public and fair compensation for those who prepare the food.

Launched in April, the menu rotates daily—idli, appam, idiyappam, chapathi—with each plate having four pieces per ₹10. Additional servings can be purchased for another ₹10. Curries like kadala (chickpea), vegetable stew or sambar accompany the dishes. Drinking water is also provided, and for those who want tea, it’s available for an additional ₹10.

Meals are to be consumed on-site; there is no takeaway facility. According to Deputy Mayor S Jayan, around 300 to 350 people are served each day under the scheme.
