Kozhikode: A group of school students came up with a calendar that can be easily read by visually challenged people. The calendar in Braille script was prepared by the members of ‘Nanma’ club at GVHSS Meenchanda here. The attempt was made as a part of Braille day that falls on January 4.
The calendar has 12 pages in which a month occupies one page. One side of the calendar has months and dates, while the other side marks the special days and the quotes of eminent personalities like Mahatma Gandhi, APJ Abdul Kalam, Jawaharlal Nehru, Helen Keller, Nelson Mandela and so on. Malayalam era, Hijri era and English months are included in it.
On the cover, a calendar readable to people with vision is also included. It will be distributed among the visually challenged persons who know Braille script. 100 copies have been printed as of now.
A calendar in Braille script was already published in a school for the visually challenged students in Thiruvananthapuram. But, it was produced for the first time in an ordinary school. The calendar was prepared with the help of Malabar Eye hospital for the visually challenged to check the calendar without depending on others.
Kozhikode Corporation Mayor Beena Philip will inaugurate the distribution at an event organised at the school on Wednesday. Headmistress PU Molly said that it will be distributed for free among visually challenged people. The preparations of the calendar were coordinated by ‘Nanma’ club conveners PT Muhammad Musthafa and P Dhananlal.
