The BJP's national office-bearer list announced on Monday is set to trigger a complete overhaul of the party's internal group equations in Kerala. Whilst K Surendran and Anil Antony have been appointed National Secretaries, A P Abdullakutty lost his post as vice president. For Surendran, the key national role comes closely on the heels of stepping down as BJP State President.

Surendran, who succeeded P S Sreedharan Pillai as state party chief, held office from February 2020 to March 2025. Having held no major organisational posts since stepping down from the presidency, this major appointment is certain to hand the V Muraleedharan faction an upper hand in the state unit's internal rivalries.

Meanwhile, this reorganisation has delivered a major setback to the P K Krishnadas faction. Neither Krishnadas nor representatives from his group secured any posts, despite expectations that Krishnadas himself might be accommodated.

Despite being a prominent female leader from Kerala, Sobha Surendran was completely excluded. Although the national list emphasised female representation, Sobha failed to secure a spot.

It is also noteworthy that Anoop Antony was overlooked for any role, despite playing a major part in election campaigns and maintaining a close relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Conversely, Anil Antony was appointed national secretary. Anoop, who contested from Thiruvalla in the recent Assembly elections, finished second with 43,078 votes, pushing sitting MLA Mathew T Thomas to third place.

Although reports suggested Anoop Antony might receive a national office-bearer post, it failed to materialise. Meanwhile, Anil Antony, son of veteran Congress leader A K Antony, secured a national secretary position.

A P Abdullakutty, who joined the BJP via the Congress after leaving the CPM, lost his post as national vice president. Having joined the BJP in 2019, Abdullakutty was appointed vice president in 2020.
