Kakkanad: Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has cancelled the registration of a vehicle for illegally obtaining a PUC (pollution under control) certificate from a centre in Coimbatore.
The incident happened in Kochi on March 25. The 1996-model vehicle (KL 9 AU 1005) failed twice in pollution tests conducted in a gap of five days at different centres in Kochi. It failed the initial test due to the presence of carbon monoxide twice the permissible limit. Five days later, the owner drove the vehicle to another centre for the test. However, within minutes after failing the second test, the centre in Coimbatore issued a certificate that the vehicle had passed the test. The PUC details also appeared on the Parivahan website.
The incident came to the attention of MVD official A.R. Rajesh, who notified Ernakulam RTO of the development. The native of Cheranallur who bought the bike had not transferred the vehicle to his name. The vehicle also failed the pollution test after it was seized.
With this, Ernakulam Enforcement RTO. K. Manoj issued an order to cancel its registration. The Tamil Nadu Transport Commissioner will be notified of the development. The department has also started taking further action. The Transport Commissioner's squad has started investigations to detect similar scams.
