Kochi: The Bengaluru-Ernakulam Vande Bharat Express could soon see a major increase in capacity, with its coach strength likely to be doubled from eight to 16, according to Ernakulam MP Hibi Eden.

In a Facebook post highlighting recent railway-related developments, Eden said South Western Railway is expected to take a decision soon on expanding the train's coach composition in view of the heavy passenger demand on the route.

"Another long-pending demand that we had raised is also likely to be addressed soon. Considering the rush of passengers, a decision by South Western Railway to increase the coaches of the Ernakulam-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Express from eight to 16 can be expected shortly," the MP said.

If implemented, the move would significantly boost seat availability on one of the busiest rail links between Karnataka and Kerala. The Bengaluru-Ernakulam Vande Bharat currently operates with eight coaches and has a seating capacity of around 530 passengers. Increasing the rake to 16 coaches would raise the capacity to approximately 1,128 seats, adding nearly 600 more seats on every trip.

The capacity enhancement is expected to bring relief to passengers who frequently struggle to secure confirmed tickets, especially during weekends, holidays and peak travel periods. The service has witnessed consistently strong demand since its launch in November 2023 and has emerged as a preferred travel option for professionals, students and families commuting between Bengaluru and Kerala.

The semi-high-speed train covers the 630-km journey between Bengaluru and Ernakulam in about 8 hours and 40 minutes, making it one of the fastest rail services operating on the route. It currently runs six days a week and is known for maintaining high occupancy levels throughout the year.

While no official date has yet been announced for the introduction of the 16-coach rake, Eden's statement indicates that a decision from South Western Railway could be imminent.

If approved, the expansion would mark the first major capacity upgrade for the Bengaluru-Ernakulam Vande Bharat since the train was introduced, reflecting the growing demand for faster rail connectivity between Kerala and Karnataka.
