Perunna: After declaring protest against Kerala Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer over his comment on propagating myths as history and science, Nair Service Society general secretary G Sukumaran Nair criticised CPM state secretary MV Govindan for backing Shamseer.

Govindan had said that myths are not history.

Sukumaran Nair, in a press release, opined that it is essential to understand that dismissing long-held beliefs, regardless of religion, in the name of science may impact the existence of the respective sects. He added that attacking beliefs of “only a certain community” cause distress to believers and is unacceptable.

During a programme at a school in Ernakulam on July 21, Shamseer said that the union government is promoting Hindu myths as scientific achievements from the ancient period, in schools. Shamseer was accused of hurting religious sentiments by the Sangh Parivar organisations.

The NSS has instructed its taluk union presidents to organise NSS workers and devotees to go to the nearest Ganesha temple and make offerings as a protest on Wednesday.

“Any behaviour that fosters religious rivalry is unacceptable. In this case, it is not right for him to continue in the post as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. He should retract his statements and apologise to believers. Otherwise, the state government must take action against the Speaker,” Sukumaran said.
