Thiruvananthapuram: The state government and CPM have decided to stop further actions on Athirappilly hydroelectric project. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who asserted that the project will not be implemented without consensus in LDF, repeated the KSEB’s stand saying NOC was given to the project as a procedure. MM Mani, Minister for Power, also declared that the project will not be implemented without reaching a consensus between LDF allies.
The minister noted that the project will be implemented if LDF agrees with it.
“The Front has not decided to scrap the project. Clearance should be renewed to implement the project after reaching in consensus. NOC was given to renew the clearance many times. CPI expressed disapproval towards the project earlier also. But CPM supported it,” said minister MM Mani.
On Thursday, CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran also expressed protest against Athirappilly project.
Responding to the controversy, he stated that neither LDF’s agenda nor manifesto carried Athirappilly project as a subject of concern.
As CPI opposed the project publicly, CPM leadership decided to be vigilant over the issue to avoid chances of political controversy. The party leadership took a firm stand that Athirappilly project should not be led to a scuffle within LDF.
Alternative sources of power
‘Only 30 percent of power is generated in Kerala. The rest 70 percent is being purchased. We can not survive without power. Hence, alternative sources should be found,” said minister MM Mani.
CM was aware of NOC
No Objection Certificate was issued to Athirappilly project after informing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, say reports. Minister MM Mani who recommended to issue NOC to extend the clearance had asked to submit the file for CM’s approval. The minister for power noted in the file that NOC is necessary to extend clearance and execute the project.
Following this, Chief Minister approved the file on April 18. Responding to the questions related to it, MM Mani added that CM signed the file as part of the normal procedure.
