Thiruvananthapuram: Writer Asokan Charuvil has been chosen for this year’s prestigious Vayalar Award for his novel ''Kattoorkadavu'.

The award includes a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a certificate of merit, and a sculpture. It is presented by the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust. 

A judging committee comprising of author Benyamin, Prof. K S Ravi Kumar, and writer Gracy selected the winner. They praised 'Kattoorkadavu' as a story that reflects the political mindset of Kerala. Out of 300 books, only six made it to the final round of selection.

The award will be presented on October 27, the death anniversary of Vayalar Ramavarma, at a special event at the Nishagandhi Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram. The ceremony will begin at 5:30 pm.

Last year, the award went to renowned poet, lyricist, and director Sreekumaran Thampi. He was given the award for his autobiography 'Jeevitham Oru Pendulam'.

The Vayalar Award is presented for the best literary work in the Malayalam language. It was established in 1977 by the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust to honour the memory of the renowned poet and lyricist, Vayalar Ramavarma.
