South India celebrates Lord Krishna`s birth on Ashtami Rohini with prayers, temple rituals, and festivities.

On Sunday, September 14, 2025, millions across South India are immersed in the joyous celebration of Ashtami Rohini, the sacred day marking the birth of Lord Krishna. Unlike much of India, which observes Krishna Janmashtami according to the lunar calendar, states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and parts of Karnataka celebrate this festival based on the solar calendar, making today especially meaningful in these regions.
From early morning prayers to temple rituals, devotional singing, and fasting, the spirit of Krishna fills the air.

Traditions and celebrations across Kerala
In Kerala, Ashtami Rohini is a day of spiritual renewal and joyful devotion. Many observe fasts, sing devotional bhajans, and visit temples where Krishna is often lovingly depicted as the mischievous Makhan Chor (butter thief). Homes and shrines are adorned with beautifully decorated idols of baby Krishna, and children dressed as the divine child add to the festive spirit.
One of the most significant centers of celebration is the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple, one of South India’s most revered Krishna shrines. Thousands of devotees flock here to witness elaborate rituals and receive blessings. The festivities begin early, with more than 200 weddings scheduled from 4 a.m. onwards. To accommodate the influx, five marriage halls are prepared, while the famed Janmashtami Sadhya (feast) will be served to approximately 40,000 devotees. The temple ensures a smooth experience by providing facilities to feed over 2,000 people simultaneously at the Sree Guruvayurappan Hall and Annalakshmi Hall.
Festive spirit in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka
In Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, Ashtami Rohini holds equal significance. Homes are beautifully decorated with kolams (rangoli), and temples resonate with the rhythmic chanting of devotional songs. Special pujas and rituals are performed to honour Lord Krishna’s divine birth.
A key pilgrimage site in Karnataka is the Sri Krishna Temple in Udupi, famed for its unique Kanakana Kindi and rich Krishna traditions.
