Thrissur, Kerala: Another alleged case of police highhandedness in Kerala has came to light after footage of a 2023 incident at Peechi police station emerged on Saturday. The video has emerged amid public scrutiny over the Kunnamkulam custodial torture case and CPM leader Sajeevan’s claims of police harassment, which have already put both the CPM-led ruling front and the police under criticism.

Complainant releases video after long legal battle

The footage was released by KP Ousepp, owner of Lalis Food and Fun Hotel in Pattikkad, following a one-and-a-half-year legal struggle. Ousepp, his son Paul Joseph, and hotel staff were allegedly insulted and assaulted at the police station on May 24, 2023, after a dispute over hotel food. The assault was reportedly carried out under the supervision of Peechi SI PM Ratheesh.

Ousepp repeatedly sought the video under the Right to Information Act, but police initially refused, citing Maoist threats and concerns over women’s safety. Intervention by the Human Rights Commission eventually led to the footage being released.

Authorities hesitant to act against officers

Despite the video evidence, authorities appear hesitant to take action against the accused officers. Ousepp has approached the Kerala High Court seeking to include the SI responsible for the assault as a defendant.

CPM leader alleges police harassment

The release of the footage coincides with CPM Nedumpana local secretary Sajeevan alleging harassment by Kannanellur Circle Inspector during a mediation meeting. Also, the CPM-led ruling front and police are already under pressure due to the Kunnamkulam custodial violence case involving a Youth Congress leader.
