Calling the film a “powerfully crafted cinematic expression,” Jayarajan lauded the makers for their efforts

The recently released Malayalam film Narivetta, starring Tovino Thomas and directed by Anuraj Manohar, is garnering widespread acclaim from critics and audiences alike. Released this past Friday, the film is written by Abin Joseph and has drawn particular attention for its politically charged narrative and cinematic finesse.
Among those to praise the film is senior CPM leader P. Jayarajan, who took to social media to express his admiration. Calling the film a “powerfully crafted cinematic expression,” Jayarajan lauded its bold political commentary, especially its references to real-life events which could serve as a strong reminder to the younger generation.
“I watched Narivetta, directed by dear friend and Iritty native Anuraj Manohar, with Tovino Thomas in the lead. The story, also from a fellow Iritty native — noted young writer Abin Joseph — stands out for its clarity in political messaging,” he wrote.
The veteran leader drew connections between the film and the 2003 Muthanga tribal agitation, a significant and controversial event in Kerala's recent history. The film, he noted, recalls the police action that took place during the tenure of then Chief Minister A. K. Antony and Forest Minister K. Sudhakaran, when tribal protestors were subjected to violence and repression.
Jayarajan acknowledged that while the film incorporates elements of fiction, it nevertheless manages to serve as a strong reminder of how marginalised communities — especially tribals — continue to be stigmatised under the pretext of Maoist affiliations.
“The film not only recreates key events but also uses imaginative storytelling to reflect the deeper trauma experienced by these communities. It’s a necessary reminder of the injustices they face,” he noted.
He went on to commend the film’s technical quality, applauding the efforts of the cast and crew for delivering a socially relevant cinema. “Narivetta is a film that must be watched, reflected upon, and discussed,” he concluded.
With critical endorsements like Jayarajan’s and a strong response at the box office, Narivetta appears poised to leave a lasting impression both as a cinematic work and a political statement.
