Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala State Transport Authority (STA) has decided to grant 503 new private bus permits, following recommendations from a meeting organised by the Transport Department. The suggested new routes cover a proposed distance of 28,146 km, in which 617 km currently lack bus services.

To avoid competition, two permits will initially be granted per route. If multiple applications are received for the same route, an auction will determine the winner. Permits will only be issued for new buses, and applicants must provide a police certificate confirming that neither the bus owner nor staff have a criminal background.

Mandatory requirements for buses include GPS, surveillance cameras, digital route boards, a geo-fencing system, digital ticket machines, and drinking water facilities for passengers. The permit fee is set at ₹5,940.

Applications will be invited by the Motor Vehicles Department once route notifications are issued. Routes with suspended services are also being revised. This initiative marks the first time passenger needs have been prioritised in route planning.

Initially, 1,000 routes were proposed, but concerns over potential harm to KSRTC operations led to revisions. Private buses are currently allowed to operate up to 5 km on KSRTC-exclusive routes, with new recommendations extending this limit to 17 km to address travel challenges.

The Chief Minister's Office reportedly intervened to withdraw controversial proposals, ensuring a balanced approach to public and private transport needs.
