Kozhikode: CPM state secretary M V Govindan continued to uphold the ‘uniform civil code’ as a progressive thought, however, he said that he was sceptical about the BJP’s decision to implement UCC taking into account the current political scenario of the country. “BJP is a fascist force, they can never be trusted,” he said.

“When it comes to uniform civil code, the intentions of RSS and BJP are entirely different, they are vicious forces who thrive on the politics of hatred,” says M V Govindan. The CPM state secretary was talking to the media in Kozhikode ahead of CPM’s national seminar against UCC scheduled to take place in the city on Saturday.

M V Govindan’s statements come amidst an ongoing campaign by UDF against the CPM leadership which had earlier supported the implementation of uniform civil code. This includes the communist stalwart late EMS Namboodiripad as well.

“The BJP government is upholding UCC only for easing religious polarisation; which indirectly will help them in building a Hindu country,” Govindan said.

“The current seminar aims to raise awareness of the fascist forces who are trying to destroy our country. Representatives of all the parties are welcome here. The seminar is rather an initiative of the broad left alliance,” says the CPM state secretary.

Responding to E P Jayarajan’s decision to not attend the seminar, M V Govindan said that “being the LDF convener, it was Jayarajan’s duty to attend the seminar, he does not require any special invitation.”
