A young innovator has gained widespread attention online after unveiling a cost-effective and open-source train accident prevention system, designed specifically for the Indian Railways.
The system, dubbed OTAPS (Open-source Train Accident Prevention System), is being hailed by netizens for its ingenuity and potential to enhance safety on the railways, with many calling on the Indian Railways to explore its adoption.
The viral video showcasing the project, posted on YouTube by a user named Farhan Khan, demonstrates how the system works in real-time. The system uses sensor-equipped "locomotive units" and "signal units" placed along the tracks to automatically slow down or stop a train in response to signals indicating potential hazards or a red light ahead. According to the creator, the system could provide an affordable alternative to the existing TCAS (KAVACH) system currently used by Indian Railways.
The young inventor, a passionate railway safety advocate, explains how OTAPS could prevent train accidents, especially in cases where the locomotive driver fails to act on critical signal information. In the video, the locomotive slows down when encountering yellow or double-yellow signals, and halts when it detects a red signal. The system also includes a web interface that enables station masters to monitor and control signal states remotely.
"I created this project with the vision that it could become a cost-effective and scalable solution for Indian Railways," said the inventor, who preferred to remain anonymous. "While the project is still in its early stages, I believe it has the potential to significantly improve safety, especially on busy railway lines where human error is a constant concern."
According to the inventor, the total cost of setting up OTAPS would be around Rs 8,000 per kilometre, a fraction of the cost of current technologies like TCAS. The components include Arduino-based sensors, which help the system monitor and respond to signal states.
