Ratan Tata’s trusted assistant and youngest General Manager, Shantanu Naidu, shared his profound grief over the loss of the national icon in a LinkedIn post early this morning. The post comes just hours after Tata, who played a pivotal role in transforming the Tata Group into India's largest conglomerate, passed away in Mumbai on Wednesday night.
“The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse 🤍,” Naidu wrote in his post, which included a photo of him and Tata on a flight together.
A lasting connection: 'I Came Upon a Lighthouse'
It is worth noting that 'I Came Upon a Lighthouse: A Short Memoir of Life with Ratan Tata' with Ratan Tata was written by Shantanu Naidu. Published by HarperCollins India in January 2021, the memoir explores the life and relationship between the millennial Naidu and the octogenarian industrialist, Ratan Tata. The book is an illustrated memoir of Naidu's candid interactions with Tata over five years. Naidu’s LinkedIn post, with the text "my dear lighthouse," serves as a reminder of that connection as well.
Currently, Naidu serves at RNT Capital, an investment platform under the Tata Group, and holds a position on the Board of Directors for Tata Small Animal Hospital.
The bond forged through innovation
Naidu's entrepreneurial spirit led him to address the issue of dog fatalities caused by speeding vehicles while working at Tata Elxsi. He proposed reflective collars for stray dogs to enhance their visibility at night. To garner support for this initiative, Naidu sent a letter to Tata, who not only responded positively but also invited him for a meeting. This encounter marked the beginning of a special friendship, enriched by their mutual love for dogs.
Shared educational journeys
Both Tata and Naidu share a unique connection through their educational journeys at Cornell University. Ratan Tata earned his B.S. in architecture from Cornell in 1962, a formative experience that laid the groundwork for his future as a leader. Decades later, Naidu also completed his MBA at the same prestigious institution, where Tata honed his skills. This commonality not only strengthened their bond but also provided Naidu with a platform to present his innovative ideas.
In his final tribute, Naidu reminds us that Ratan Tata was more than just a mentor; he was a guiding light in his life.
