Mumbai's anti-exam irregularities protests found a new symbol of resistance on Wednesday after actor-model Rhiya Ahir was seen blocking a moving police van carrying detained protesters during demonstrations in Dadar.

The dramatic visuals, recorded amid heavy rain, have gone viral on social media, with many hailing her as the face of the protests.

Ahir, wearing a hoodie and cap, stood in front of the police vehicle near Shivaji Park, refusing to move despite repeated attempts by authorities to clear the road.

Protesters gathered around her, raising slogans and cheering as the confrontation unfolded. She later said she intervened because she believed the police were acting irresponsibly.

'I am not a student, but I stand with them. If the police won't take responsibility, then we will take responsibility for our citizens,' she said, while also criticising the police action against protesters in Delhi earlier this week.

As the video spread online, another clip from Mumbai's Chembur also gained traction.

The video purportedly shows a man helping free detained student protesters from police custody, adding to the growing public attention around the demonstrations.

Who is Rhiya Ahir?

Rhiya Ahir, also known as ‘Rhiya Ekousiya’ on Instagram, is an actor, model, entrepreneur and host.

She has nearly one lakh followers on the platform and has appeared in several music videos and dance projects. Her latest music video, 'Dilbara', was released in February 2025.

Apart from her work in entertainment, Ahir runs her luxury clothing label, 'Rhiyasat', where she designs and handcrafts garments.

Mumbai has witnessed protests for three consecutive days in solidarity with the student movement over alleged examination irregularities and the police crackdown on demonstrators in Delhi. Demonstrations have been held at Shivaji Park, Chaityabhoomi, Chembur and Shiv Sena Bhavan.

According to officials, Mumbai Police have registered 13 FIRs between July 18 and July 22 in connection with the protests, booking around 400 people for unlawful assembly and alleged violation of prohibitory orders.
