A viral image from Bengal has captured an unusual political moment. As he stepped down as panchayat chief, a TMC leader publicly performed ear-holding sit-ups and sought forgiveness from villagers, while elsewhere relief materials were returned and another party leader was arrested.

Politics is not usually a place where leaders say ‘sorry’. If anything, public life often works in reverse: mistakes are denied, accusations are dismissed, and accountability is somebody else’s problem.
That is why the scenes emerging from different corners of West Bengal this week have left many residents rubbing their eyes in disbelief.
In one of the most striking images, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader was seen holding his ears and doing sit-ups in front of villagers while stepping down from office.
The unusual spectacle unfolded in East Midnapore's Potashpur, where Naipur Panchayat Pradhan Arup Maity resigned from his post, citing personal reasons.
However, it was not the resignation alone that grabbed attention. While submitting his resignation, Maity publicly sought forgiveness from villagers, saying that if he had unknowingly committed any mistakes during his tenure, he wished to apologise.
Photographs of the ear-holding sit-ups quickly spread across social media, turning the moment into one of the most talked-about political visuals of the day. Watch the video below:
Meanwhile, another development from Basirhat added to the growing sense that Bengal’s political landscape is witnessing unusual scenes amid the changing circumstances in the state.
Former TMC MLA Saptarshi Banerjee voluntarily handed over a large stock of government relief materials that had been stored at his residence.
According to sources, Banerjee had written to the police on May 31 expressing his intention to return the items to the administration. Acting on that request, police recovered the materials from his premises.
The stock reportedly included tarpaulins, blankets, dhotis, sarees, lungis, children's garments, pyjama-panjabi sets, kurtis and leggings.
Banerjee maintained that the materials had originally been obtained under the MLA quota for distribution during Eid and were being returned because they were no longer required.
The developments come at a time when allegations surrounding relief distribution and the recovery of government materials from the residences and warehouses of political figures have triggered public debate across several districts.
Adding to the day’s dramatic developments, police arrested Trinamool leader Prabir Majumdar in Habra.
Majumdar, an office-bearer of the Habra-II Panchayat Samiti, faces multiple allegations, including intimidation, violence and allegedly pressuring a family to withdraw a minor rape case.
Police said he was arrested near a playground in Ashoknagar after reportedly remaining out of sight for an extended period.
Taken together, the incidents paint a remarkable picture of a political environment where apologies, returns and arrests are suddenly making headlines alongside power and politics.
