CV Ananda Bose has resigned as the Governor of West Bengal ahead of assembly elections.

New Delhi: CV Ananda Bose has resigned as the Governor of West Bengal after serving for about three-and-a-half years, stepping down ahead of the state’s 2026 Assembly elections.
Bose confirmed his resignation to PTI, saying, "I have spent enough time at governor's office," after leaving the post.
According to a Lok Bhavan official cited by PTI, Bose submitted his resignation in New Delhi on Thursday. He had been serving as the Governor of West Bengal since November 2022 after being appointed by the Centre.
He, however, did not disclose the grounds of his sudden resignation and whether there was any political pressure that may have prompted his decision.
Reacting to the development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said she was shocked by the sudden development. In a post on X, she wrote:
"I am shocked and deeply concerned by the sudden news of the resignation of Shri C. V. Ananda Bose, the Governor of West Bengal.
The reasons behind his resignation are not known to me at this moment. However, given the prevailing circumstances, I would not be surprised if the Governor has been subjected to some pressure from the Union Home Minister to serve certain political interests on the eve of the forthcoming State Assembly elections.
Union Home Minister just informed me that Shri R.N. Ravi is being appointed as Governor of West Bengal. He never consulted with me as per the established convention in this regard.
Such actions undermine the spirit of the Constitution of India and strike at the very foundation of our federal structure. The Centre must respect the principles of cooperative federalism and refrain from taking unilateral decisions that erode democratic conventions and the dignity of States."
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee confirmed that Tamil Nadu Governor and ex-deputy NSA, RN Ravi, will hold additional charge of West Bengal following Bose's exit.
The resignation comes months before the 2026 Assembly polls in the eastern state.
CV Ananda Bose is a recipient of the Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship. He was also the first Fellow of the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie, the institute that trains India’s top civil service officers. A prolific author and columnist, the former bureaucrat has written around 40 books in English, Malayalam and Hindi, including novels, short stories, poetry and essays.
He also chaired a working group that drafted a development agenda for the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His idea of “affordable housing for all” was later adopted by the government.
