Kolkata: In a significant development in the controversy surrounding football icon Lionel Messi’s visit to Kolkata, Bidhannagar South Police Station has registered an FIR against former West Bengal Sports Minister Aroop Biswas based on a complaint filed by event organizer Satadru Dutta.

Dutta shared a copy of the FIR on social media and wrote ‘Truth Prevails,’ while thanking current Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, Sports Minister Nisith Pramanik and the state Director General of Police for what he described as support in securing legal action.

The controversy stems from the high-profile event held at Salt Lake Stadium on December 13, 2025, as part of the ‘GOAT India Tour’.

Football stars Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Rodrigo De Paul attended the Kolkata leg of the tour, which generated massive public interest.

However, the event descended into chaos amid allegations of severe mismanagement.

Reports suggested ticket prices originally sold for ₹18,000 were resold at much higher rates in the black market.

The situation worsened when hundreds of spectators allegedly entered the field after sections of the gallery were breached, leading to scenes that drew national and international attention.

While similar events in Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad were completed without major disruptions, the Kolkata programme ended in controversy, with Dutta facing legal consequences at the time.

Following the change in government in West Bengal, Dutta has repeatedly alleged that Biswas pressured him to provide a large number of tickets and passes.

He also claimed that he had alerted authorities about potential security concerns before the event but that preventive measures were not taken.

Dutta has further alleged that he was unfairly blamed for the incident despite raising concerns in advance.

He claims to possess video evidence relating to the disruption and has vowed to pursue legal action against those responsible.

The FIR marks a major development in the case and has reignited debate over accountability for the disorder that marred one of Kolkata’s most anticipated sporting events.

Police have not announced any arrests so far, and the investigation is underway.
