Chennai: Actor-turned-politician and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay is preparing for his electoral debut with a two-constituency strategy in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Party sources said Vijay is likely to contest from Virugambakkam in Chennai and Tiruchy East, combining urban visibility with regional outreach.

Virugambakkam, in west Chennai, offers strong name recognition, an active party cadre and a large base of young and first-time voters. It is seen as organisationally favourable for TVK.

Tiruchy East is viewed as crucial for building the party’s presence in central Tamil Nadu. Leaders said the region plays a key role in shaping statewide political trends.

Party insiders said constituencies such as Velachery, Vikravandi and Nagapattinam were also considered before finalising Virugambakkam. Factors like voter familiarity, booth-level strength and ground mobilisation influenced the decision.

The choice of Tiruchy East is meant to complement the Chennai base and signal that TVK aims to expand across the state.

TVK leaders said detailed campaign plans will be announced soon, with Vijay set to intensify grassroots outreach and public meetings.

The party plans to blend star appeal with local issues to connect with voters. Leaders also said contesting from two seats is a cautious move to improve Vijay’s chances in his first election.

Both constituencies are currently held by DMK MLAs — A M V Prabhakara Raja (Virugambakkam) and Inigo S Irudayaraj (Tiruchy East) — setting up high-profile contests.
