From water bottles thrown into the crowd to Stalin’s urgent orders, here’s what we know so far about the stampede at Vijay’s rally in Karur

Karur: A tragic stampede-like situation unfolded at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur during his campaign for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Several people fainted, and fatalities have been reported. Below is what is known so far about the incident and the government response.
What we know so far
Vijay, president of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was scheduled to reach Karur around midday on Saturday, but faced a delay of at least six hours.
By the time he did arrive, the crowd had swelled to dangerous levels. Several attendees fainted due to overcrowding and high temperatures.
Observing the escalating chaos, the actor-politician halted his address and began throwing water bottles to his supporters from atop the specially built campaign bus.
Eyewitnesses also report that he appealed to security and onlookers, saying “Police please help” as he noticed people collapsing in the crowd.
Officials later stated that the stampede was triggered when a segment of the crowd surged forward, trying to get closer to Vijay’s bus, causing people to fall and fallers to fall in turn.
How many casualties and injuries have been reported?
Initial reports suggest 10 people have died and over 30 others were injured in the melee at the Velusamypuram site along the Karur–Erode highway.
However, later media updates indicate that the death toll could be higher, some sources now report 20 or more fatalities, including children, with many others taken to hospitals in critical condition. At least 30 people have been hospitalised, many suffering from fainting, fractures or respiratory distress.
What has the government said or done?
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin described the news from Karur as “worrying.”
He confirmed that he had contacted Health Minister Ma Subramanian, former Minister V. Senthilbalaji, and the District Collector to ensure those who fainted receive immediate medical care.
Stalin also instructed Minister Anbil Mahesh to rush to Karur to assist, and directed top police officials, including the ADGP, to restore normalcy expeditiously. Additionally, he appealed for public cooperation with doctors and police.
One report notes that Stalin is expected to visit Karur hospital the next morning to assess the damage and support victims’ families.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief at the death of several people during a stampede.
PM Modi said on X, "The unfortunate incident during a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, is deeply saddening. My thoughts are with the families who have lost their loved ones. Wishing strength to them in this difficult time. Praying for a swift recovery to all those injured."
What are the key challenges and concerns?
The massive crowd size clearly exceeded expectations, overwhelming security and medical readiness.
Ambulances and emergency services reportedly struggled to reach victims due to congestion and blockages.
Questions are being raised about crowd management, demonstration planning, and safety protocols at high-profile political events.
The variation in reported death tolls suggests ongoing confusion and the possibility of further casualties.
