Varanasi: A passenger travelling with his wife on an Air India Express flight to Mumbai fired a round during a weapons check at Varanasi airport on Sunday morning, injuring two AAICLAS screeners.

The incident took place at around 9:30 am when the passenger, travelling on flight IX-1810 to Mumbai, declared weapons on board the flight.

During the weapons check, the passenger fired a round, injuring two AAICLAS screeners. Both injured screeners were taken to New Laxmi Trauma Centre for treatment.

The airport authorities informed the local police following the incident. An investigation is currently underway, the Varanasi Airport Director said.

The circumstances surrounding how the round was fired during the weapons check are part of the ongoing investigation.
