Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced that the national song Vande Mataram will be made compulsory in all schools and educational institutions across the state.

Lucknow: Amid a political row over the song Vande Mataram, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath stated on Monday that its singing would be mandatory in every school and educational institution in the state. According to the CM, this initiative aims to instil feelings of reverence and national pride among citizens.
The announcement comes in the wake of a political debate between the BJP and Congress following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks that important stanzas of Vande Mataram were dropped in 1937, which he claimed sowed the seeds of the partition. Modi also stated that such a “divisive mindset” remains a challenge in India today.

The Congress responded by asserting that the PM’s comments insulted the Congress Working Committee of 1937 and Rabindranath Tagore. In a post on X, party leader Ramesh highlighted the members of the 1937 committee, which included Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Patel, Subhas Chandra Bose, Rajendra Prasad, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Sarojini Naidu, and others, urging the PM to focus on contemporary issues instead.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasised that a sense of respect for the national song is essential and that mandating its singing in schools will help cultivate patriotism among students. The policy will apply to all educational institutions in Uttar Pradesh, from government-run to private schools.
The recent political controversy began after PM Modi’s statements regarding the historical omission of certain stanzas of Vande Mataram in 1937, which he suggested contributed to communal divisions prior to the partition. The Congress party strongly countered this view, arguing that the PM’s remarks disrespected both the historical Congress Working Committee and the poet Rabindranath Tagore, calling for attention to present-day issues affecting citizens.
This announcement adds a new dimension to the ongoing debate on the role of patriotic songs in education and the intersection of history, politics, and nationalism in India.
