The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that all charges for the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU-1) in Aadhaar will be waived for children. The decision, effective from 1 October 2025, will remain in force for one year and is expected to benefit approximately six crore children.

What is the current rule?

Under the Aadhaar enrolment process, children under the age of five are registered using only demographic details and a photograph, as their biometric data—fingerprints and iris—are not collected at that age. As per existing rules, once a child reaches the age of five, it becomes mandatory to update the biometric information. This first Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) is normally free if completed before the age of seven, after which a fee of ₹100 is charged.

A second MBU is required between the ages of 15 and 17, also free of cost if completed on time. Beyond this age bracket, a fee of ₹125 applies for any biometric updates.

What is the new update?

With the latest decision, all biometric updates for children aged five to 17 will be free, regardless of when they are completed.

Timely completion of MBU is crucial to maintain the accuracy of biometric data and to prevent deactivation of the Aadhaar number. Updated biometrics ensure smooth access to services such as school admissions, entrance examinations, scholarships, and Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes.
