Southern Railway on Sunday shared interesting trivia on its official X platform handle about the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station. According to the post, Chennai Central Railway Station has the longest name among all Indian railway stations!
It is noteworthy that the station was renamed Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station in 2019. The name change occurred when the union government accepted the Tamil Nadu AIADMK government's recommendation to rename the station in honour of former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran. This recommendation was made during the centenary celebrations of the former chief minister. The station was initially known as Madras Central, but following the city's renaming, it adopted the name Chennai Central.
The station holds a significant NSG-1 category status under the Chennai division of the Southern Railway zone. It serves as the primary railway terminus in the city and is the busiest in South India, making it one of the nation's crucial railway hubs. This terminus links Chennai to various parts of northern India, such as Kolkata, Mumbai, and New Delhi, as well as other regions across the country.
The station's historic building, designed by architect George Harding, stands as a prominent landmark in Chennai and Tamil Nadu.
