Average monthly cargo handling has increased from 540 metric tonnes to nearly 590 metric tonnes, reflecting rising trade activity and the airport’s expanding logistics capabilities.

Tiruchirappalli International Airport is steadily positioning itself as a major cargo gateway for central and southern India, registering a strong 10% growth in international cargo volumes. Average monthly cargo handling has increased from 540 metric tonnes to nearly 590 metric tonnes, reflecting rising trade activity and the airport’s expanding logistics capabilities.
This growth underlines Tiruchirappalli’s evolving role as a critical logistics hub serving central Tamil Nadu and neighbouring regions, offering businesses improved access to international markets and faster cargo movement.

First-ever transhipment facility boosts connectivity
A key milestone in the airport’s transformation was the commissioning of its first transhipment facility on October 13, 2025. This facility allows cargo to be transferred between aircraft at Tiruchirappalli, enabling consolidation of shipments and onward routing to multiple destinations.

The transhipment model reduces freight costs through better load optimisation and provides vital connectivity for city pairs without direct flight services. This is particularly beneficial for tier-2 and tier-3 cities like Tiruchirappalli, which often rely on metro hubs for international cargo access.
Domestic cargo terminal planned to support growing demand
To meet rising domestic cargo demand, the airport is planning a full-fledged domestic cargo terminal with a projected handling capacity of around 200 metric tonnes per month. The terminal will be integrated with the existing international cargo complex, creating a unified cargo ecosystem.
The airport’s strong multimodal connectivity, including direct access to National Highways 83 and 38, and proximity to major ports, further strengthens its appeal as a logistics hub for exporters, manufacturers, and e-commerce players.
International courier services to strengthen trade links
In another major development, the International Courier Facility, notified in 2022 but not yet operational, is now set to be activated under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model through an Operations and Maintenance contract.

Once operational, the facility will allow businesses and individuals to send time-sensitive documents and parcels directly to destinations across Southeast Asia and the Gulf. This will offer faster transit times and more cost-effective alternatives to routing cargo through major metro airports.
A Comprehensive cargo hub
With sustained growth in international cargo, the launch of a transhipment facility, plans for a domestic cargo terminal, and the upcoming activation of international courier services, Tiruchirappalli International Airport is rapidly transforming into a comprehensive cargo hub.
These developments are expected to significantly strengthen the logistics infrastructure of central and southern India, enhance regional trade competitiveness, and position Tiruchirappalli as the next major cargo gateway beyond traditional metro airports.
