Arunachal Pradesh, often called the ‘Land of the Rising Sun,’ is known for its breathtaking mountains, lush valleys, and vibrant tribal culture. With snow-capped Himalayan peaks, crystal-clear rivers, monasteries perched on hills, and untouched forests, the state has been steadily drawing travellers seeking adventure, spirituality, and natural beauty.

Now, with tourism demand to this Northeastern gem on the rise, a major infrastructure boost has arrived. The new terminal building of Donyi Polo Airport at Hollongi was inaugurated on Thursday by Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu and Chief Minister Pema Khandu. Officials say the modern terminal will ease congestion, improve flight operations, and further open up Arunachal’s scenic landscapes to tourists and traders alike.

From September 17, IndiGo will increase its flights on the Delhi–Hollongi route from four days a week to daily operations, complementing existing links to Guwahati, Kolkata, and Tezu. This expansion is expected to make travel smoother for visitors while providing residents greater access to India’s metros.

“In the last 11 years, the number of airports, aircraft and passengers in India has doubled. This is proof of the government’s commitment to connectivity,” said Minister Naidu, calling it a “happy day for civil aviation and Arunachal Pradesh.”

Chief Minister Khandu highlighted that the facility would especially benefit students, entrepreneurs, and families who often travel outside the state for education, business, and healthcare. “With this new terminal, we are not just improving infrastructure, we are improving lives,” he added.

Built at a cost of about INR 640 crore, the Hollongi airport is Arunachal’s first greenfield airport, originally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2022. The upgraded terminal can now handle 800 passengers at a time, a huge leap from the earlier 150 at the temporary facility, giving it an annual handling capacity of nearly 15 lakh passengers.

Passengers will also enjoy new initiatives like the UDAN Yatri Café, a traveller’s library scheme, the AVASAR programme promoting self-help groups and women entrepreneurs, and even a kids’ store. Plans are in place to add free Wi-Fi, charging stations, and workspaces, while ensuring that the terminal reflects the rich culture of the region.

The launch coincided with the Northeastern Ministerial Conference in Itanagar, underlining the Centre’s push for stronger connectivity and development in the region.

With its snow-fed rivers like Siang and Subansiri, monasteries such as Tawang, national parks like Namdapha, and its reputation as India’s orchid paradise, Arunachal Pradesh has long been a dream for travellers. Now, with this modern terminal at Hollongi, the journey to this spectacular destination becomes easier, promising a new wave of tourism and economic growth.
