In a major boost to India’s aerospace ambitions, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) will set up the country’s first private-sector helicopter final assembly line (FAL) in Vemagal, Karnataka. The facility will manufacture the Airbus H125, the world’s best-selling single-engine helicopter, widely known for its versatility and ability to operate in extreme conditions.

The move marks a significant step in India’s efforts to become self-reliant in aerospace manufacturing and strengthens Karnataka’s role as a growing hub for the aviation and defence industry.

The first “Made in India” H125 helicopter is expected to be delivered in early 2027. These helicopters will serve both India’s civil and para-public markets, supporting critical missions such as emergency medical services, disaster relief, law enforcement, tourism, and passenger transport.

A military version, the H125M, will also be developed at the same facility with high levels of indigenous components and technology. The H125M is seen as a strong candidate to replace the ageing Cheetah and Chetak fleets of the Indian armed forces, especially for operations in high-altitude Himalayan regions. The helicopters manufactured in Karnataka will also be available for export across South Asia, further enhancing India’s role in the regional rotorcraft market.

Karnataka has been steadily emerging as an aerospace hub, hosting global OEMs, defence PSUs, and a strong network of MSMEs. With the new Tata-Airbus helicopter line, Vemagal joins Bengaluru and other clusters in reinforcing Karnataka’s leadership in aviation manufacturing and innovation.

This is Airbus’ second final assembly line in India with Tata, after the C295 military aircraft plant in Vadodara, Gujarat. It underlines Airbus’ long-term commitment to India’s aerospace ecosystem. Airbus already sources more than $1.4 billion annually from India, including aircraft doors, flap-track beams, and helicopter cabin aerostructures.

Airbus’s association with India goes back over 60 years, when it partnered with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to produce the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, which continue to serve the armed forces. The H125M is now positioned as the modern successor to these workhorses.

The Airbus H125 has logged over 40 million flight hours worldwide and is the only helicopter to have landed on Mount Everest, demonstrating its unmatched ability to operate in extreme, high-altitude environments. It can be quickly reconfigured for missions like firefighting, air ambulance, rescue operations, aerial work, and passenger transport.

The Tata-Airbus project is expected to boost India’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ vision in aerospace and defence, while also creating jobs, developing skills, and strengthening the local supply chain. By anchoring the helicopter programme in Karnataka, the state further cements its reputation as the aerospace capital of India.
