Tamil Nadu is set to experience moderate rainfall accompanied by strong winds over the next three days, with the Western Ghats, Cauvery Delta districts and parts of interior Tamil Nadu expected to receive the most significant weather activity, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The weather department attributed the conditions to an upper-air cyclonic circulation prevailing over the north coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, which is influencing weather patterns across the state, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.

Under the impact of the system, rainfall is likely to continue across several parts of the region for at least a week.

The IMD has forecast moderate rain and gusty winds at isolated locations in the Western Ghats districts, Delta region and northern interior Tamil Nadu on Friday and Saturday.

Meteorologists said moisture-laden winds and favourable atmospheric conditions are supporting cloud formation, leading to intermittent showers and thunderstorms in many areas.

Rainfall activity is expected to persist through the weekend, particularly in districts along the Western Ghats, the Cauvery Delta belt and parts of southern Tamil Nadu.

Hilly and adjoining areas in the Western Ghats may witness occasional spells of rain coupled with strong surface winds.

The showers could prove beneficial for farmers in the agriculturally important Delta region as preparations begin for the upcoming cultivation season.

Authorities have advised residents, especially those in low-lying and waterlogging-prone areas, to remain alert.

People undertaking outdoor activities have also been urged to monitor weather updates and exercise caution during periods of intense rainfall, lightning and strong winds.

In Chennai, skies are likely to remain generally cloudy, with moderate rain, thunderstorms and lightning expected in isolated pockets.

While heavy rain is not anticipated, localised showers may cause traffic disruptions and affect routine activities in some parts of the city.

The IMD said it is closely monitoring the evolving weather system and will issue updated forecasts and advisories as needed.

The expected rainfall is likely to provide relief from the recent spell of humid weather across many parts of Tamil Nadu.
