Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M K Stalin on Monday highlighted the importance of studying Artificial Intelligence (AI), describing it as “humanity’s second greatest breakthrough” after the discovery of fire.

Speaking at the launch of the ‘World in Your Hands’ scheme, under which 10 lakh laptops were distributed to college students across Tamil Nadu, the Chief Minister urged young people to continuously update their skills and adapt to emerging technologies. He described the scheme as an investment in the state’s future rather than an expense.

“Artificial Intelligence is one of humanity's greatest breakthroughs, second only to the discovery of fire. This scheme is not an expense; it is an investment in our future. Don't stop with just one or two degrees; everyone must continue to update themselves with new technology,” Stalin said.

He stressed that AI cannot replace human beings but can help improve efficiency and productivity. “AI cannot replace human beings. It can only help us work faster and more efficiently. We must use it wisely and rise higher in life,” he added.

Urging students to make constructive use of the laptops, the Chief Minister said the devices should be used to advance education rather than for entertainment alone. “The choice is yours: will you use this laptop only for gaming, or will you use it to advance your education? Study with confidence, I will take care of everything. My wish is that our young people grow into proud, successful Tamils,” he said.

Meanwhile, on Sunday, Stalin announced a Pongal festival cash assistance of ₹3,000 for all rice ration card-holding families in Tamil Nadu, extending the benefit to families living in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps.

According to a state government press release, the cash assistance will be distributed ahead of the Pongal festival through fair price shops, along with the traditional Pongal gift hamper and clothing. The Chief Minister has instructed officials to complete all arrangements in advance to ensure beneficiaries receive the assistance without delay.

The government estimates that 2,22,01,710 rice ration card-holding families, including those residing in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps, will benefit from the Pongal assistance this year. Officials said dhotis and sarees meant for festival distribution have already been dispatched to all districts.

The cash aid is expected to provide financial relief to households amid rising living costs and help families meet festival-related expenses, the government said, reiterating its commitment to social welfare and inclusive development.
