A SpiceJet aircraft collided with an Akasa Air plane at Delhi’s IGI Airport during taxiing

New Delhi: Two aircraft operated by Akasa Air and SpiceJet were involved in a ground incident at Delhi airport on Thursday afternoon, after their wings came into contact on the taxiway. Both planes have since been grounded due to the damage sustained, officials confirmed.

According to officials, the incident occurred at around 2.15 pm at Terminal 1 of the airport. At the time, the Akasa Air aircraft was preparing for take-off and taxiing on the runway, while the SpiceJet plane was moving towards its parking stand.
The contact between the wings of the two aircraft took place during these movements on the taxiway.
Flights and aircraft details
Officials stated that the Akasa Air aircraft was scheduled to operate flight QP-1406 from Delhi to Hyderabad. The SpiceJet aircraft involved in the incident had arrived from Leh.
The Akasa Air plane was identified as a Boeing 737 MAX 8, while SpiceJet confirmed that its aircraft was a Boeing 737-700.
Statement from Akasa Air
In an official statement, Akasa Air said that its aircraft operating flight QP 1406 from Delhi to Hyderabad had to return to the bay on April 16, 2026.
“Preliminary information indicates that Akasa's aircraft was stationary when another airline's aircraft made contact with it,” the airline stated.
The airline also confirmed that all passengers and crew were safely disembarked following the incident.
“In line with established protocols, the relevant authorities have been informed, and the matter is under investigation,” the statement added.
SpiceJet confirms damage
SpiceJet also issued a statement regarding the occurrence, describing it as a ground incident that took place while its aircraft was taxiing at the Delhi airport.
The airline said the event resulted in damage to the right winglet of its aircraft, as well as the left-hand horizontal stabiliser of the other aircraft involved.
SpiceJet further confirmed that its aircraft has been grounded in Delhi following the incident.
Investigation underway
Officials reiterated that the wings of both aircraft made contact while on the taxiway. Authorities have been informed, and an investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
