Guwahati: The Assam government will request the Gauhati High Court to establish a fast-track court to ensure speedy justice in the case surrounding the death of beloved singer Zubeen Garg, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday.

Speaking at a press conference, the CM said, “'There is usually a complaint that courts take a long time to deliver justice. So the state cabinet has decided to approach the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court for a fast track hearing into the case after the Special Investigating Team submits its chargesheet.”

Sarma added that the SIT is expected to complete its investigation by the end of November, with the chargesheet likely to be filed in the first week of December.

To support the legal process, the state cabinet has also decided to appoint a Special Public Prosecutor, based on the recommendation of the Advocate General. This prosecutor will be exclusively assigned to the case, from the filing of the charge sheet to the delivery of the final verdict.

Honouring a cultural icon

In a parallel decision, the Assam Cabinet has approved the constitution of an 11-member committee to plan and design Zubeen Garg’s Samadhi Kshetra (final resting place). The committee will include family members and notable personalities to ensure that the memorial reflects Garg’s profound impact on Assamese culture and music.

Zubeen Garg, 52, passed away on September 19 while swimming in the sea in Singapore.
