Six terrorists killed in south Kashmir in 48 hours; Army details successful operations in Shopian and Tral

Srinagar: On Friday, Security force officials including Major General Joshi and IGP Kashmir VK Birdi provided a detailed briefing on recent counter-terrorism operations in south Kashmir, highlighting the success of two simultaneous operations conducted in different terrains. The operations involved close coordination between Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, and the Army.
Maj Gen Joshi confirmed that the terrorists killed in these operations were linked to multiple serious crimes, including murders and assaults.
The neutralisation of these militants is expected to send a strong warning to terrorist groups operating in the region. He emphasised that timely intelligence inputs played a crucial role in the success of these operations, which resulted in the elimination of six terrorists across south Kashmir within the last 48 hours.
IGP Kashmir VK Birdi says, "In the last 48 hours, we have conducted two very successful operations. These two operations were conducted in the Keran and Tral areas, which resulted in the neutralisation of a total of six terrorists. We are committed to ending the terror ecosystem here."
Earlier, on Tuesday, security forces killed three local Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists during an encounter in the Shukro Keller area of south Kashmir’s Shopian district. A joint team of police, Army, and CRPF launched a search operation in the Nader area of Tral following specific intelligence about terrorists’ presence. As forces intensified their search, militants fired upon them, prompting a retaliatory gunfight.
The encounter resulted in the neutralisation of three terrorists and the recovery of arms and ammunition. The slain terrorists were identified as Asif Ahmad Sheikh, son of Gh Mohammad Sheikh from Monghama Tral (active since April 2022); Aamir Nazir Wani, son of Nazir Ahmad Wani from Khasipora Tral (active since April 2024); and Yawar Ahmad Bhat, son of Nazir Ahmad Bhat from Larow Tral (active since August 2024).
Inspector General of Police Kashmir, V K Birdi, said timely intelligence enabled the swift establishment of a cordon, leading to the encounter. “This operation is part of an all-out effort to dismantle the terror ecosystem operating in the region,” Birdi stated. Officials noted that the elimination of these terrorists and the recovery of weapons represents a significant blow to terrorist operational capabilities in south Kashmir. The neutralised militants were involved in multiple attacks in recent months. The houses of Asif and Aamir were demolished last month following the killing of 26 tourists in Pahalgam.
