Jodhpur: Activist and scientist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail since September 27, 2025, was taken to AIIMS Jodhpur early Saturday morning for medical examination following directions from the Supreme Court, officials said.

He spent around 90 minutes in the gastroenterology department before being escorted back to jail.

Why was Sonam Wangchuk taken to AIIMS?

According to hospital sources, Wangchuk has been suffering from persistent stomach-related problems and had also visited AIIMS Jodhpur on Friday for medical tests. His health concerns were raised before the Supreme Court by his wife through a petition.

During a hearing on Thursday, a bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and P B Varale directed jail authorities to ensure that Wangchuk is examined by a specialist doctor, specifically a gastroenterologist, at a government hospital.

What did the Supreme Court say?

The court also asked the jail administration to submit Wangchuk’s medical report by February 2. Additional Solicitor General K M Nataraj, appearing for the Rajasthan government, told the court that jail doctors had examined Wangchuk 21 times in the last four months, with the most recent check-up on January 26.

However, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, representing Wangchuk, argued that his client continued to suffer from stomach pain due to poor water quality in jail. Accepting this submission, the court said specialist treatment must be provided according to the patient’s medical needs.

Police officials said Wangchuk was taken from Jodhpur Central Jail to the emergency department of AIIMS early Saturday as part of compliance with the court’s directions.
