Actor-turned-politician Vijay takes oath as Tamil Nadu CM in 2026. BJP's Shehzad Poonawalla urges the new leader to prioritise stable governance. Read more.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay, the actor-turned-politician and TVK chief, is under pressure to deliver “daily hits” in governance after taking oath as Chief Minister, BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said on Sunday. His remark came shortly after Vijay’s swearing-in ceremony in Chennai, which marked a major political shift in the state.
Speaking to ANI, Poonawalla congratulated Vijay but stressed that running a government is very different from working in films, where success is measured by box office results.
“Let me use this occasion to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the people of Tamil Nadu and to Vijay for being sworn-in as the CM of Tamil Nadu. He has a huge onerous task ahead of him, and therefore it is necessary that, unlike in the movie world, here he has to deliver a hit on a daily basis,” he said.
Poonawalla also said the new Chief Minister must ensure stable governance, focus on delivery of promises, and maintain a clear administrative agenda for the state.
“All the best to him. I hope he fulfils all the promises that he has made to the people of Tamil Nadu and gives them a stable government that is oriented towards development,” he added.
Vijay, whose full name is Chandrasekhar Joseph Vijay, was sworn in on Sunday as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at a grand oath-taking ceremony held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office and secrecy, officially marking the formation of the new TVK-led government.
The high-profile event turned into a major political and public spectacle, attended by several prominent leaders and celebrities, including Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Vijay’s parents S. A. Chandrasekhar and Sobha Chandrasekhar, and actor Trisha Krishnan.
Ahead of the ceremony, Vijay personally welcomed the Governor at the venue and introduced him to his newly appointed ministers.
Along with Vijay, nine Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leaders were sworn in as ministers in the party’s maiden cabinet.
The ministers include N Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, KA Sengottaiyan, KG Arunraj, P Venkataramanan, R Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, TK Prabhu, and S Keerthana.
The cabinet formation marks TVK’s formal entry into state administration following its electoral debut.
The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections triggered a significant political change, with TVK winning 108 out of 234 seats in its first electoral contest.
While the party did not secure a simple majority on its own, it formed the government with support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML.
The result disrupted the long-standing dominance of DMK and AIADMK in Tamil Nadu politics and positioned TVK as a new force in the state.
