Surendranagar: More than 60 people, including several women and children, were hospitalised following a suspected case of food poisoning in Gomta village of Gujarat’s Surendranagar district on Saturday night.

The incident reportedly occurred after residents consumed buttermilk served during a house Vastu ceremony. Soon after the meal, many began experiencing symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea, and stomach pain.

The affected individuals were rushed to hospitals in Limbdi and Wadhwan, where they are receiving medical treatment.

"More than 60 people suffered from food poisoning after a festive meal in Gomta village. All patients are under medical supervision, and their condition is currently stable,” said Taluk Health Officer Dr. Jayesh Vaghela.

Health and local administration teams quickly reached the village and hospitals to assess the situation. Samples of the buttermilk have been sent for laboratory analysis to identify the cause of contamination.

The district Health Department has launched an inquiry and is closely monitoring the condition of the affected residents. Officials said all patients are recovering well.

Meanwhile, the Gujarat government has stepped up efforts to prevent such incidents by tightening food safety enforcement, increasing inspections, and promoting hygiene awareness.

According to the Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA), around 60,448 food samples were tested across Gujarat in 2024–25. Of these, 1.45 per cent failed quality checks and 0.17 per cent were found unsafe for consumption.

Under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, authorities filed 980 adjudication cases, resolving 864 and imposing fines totalling Rs 6.21 crore. Another 87 court cases led to additional penalties of Rs 0.54 crore.

The FDCA continues to conduct statewide raids to seize adulterated food items and penalise offenders. Health officials are also carrying out regular awareness drives on safe food handling, especially at community gatherings and large-scale public meals.
