Supreme Court Bar Association expels advocate Rakesh Kishore for shoe-throwing attempt at CJI

Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has expelled advocate Rakesh Kishore following his attempt to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai during a Supreme Court hearing on October 6, 2025.
The SCBA issued a resolution terminating Kishore’s temporary membership with immediate effect and barred him from entering the Supreme Court premises. The resolution also cancelled any membership card issued to him and directed the Supreme Court Secretary-General to revoke his proximity access card.
What led to the expulsion?
The incident occurred during a routine hearing when Kishore allegedly removed his shoe and attempted to throw it at CJI Gavai. He was promptly restrained by security personnel and escorted out of the courtroom. Kishore later claimed that his actions were driven by "emotional pain" over what he perceived as repeated judicial interference in Hindu religious matters. He expressed no regret for his actions and stated, "No, the thing is, I was deeply hurt." He further alleged that the judiciary acts differently depending on the communities involved.
Further legal actions and reactions
Following the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) suspended Kishore from practicing law nationwide, describing his actions as "inconsistent with the dignity" of the legal profession.
Disciplinary proceedings are underway, and a show-cause notice has been issued to Kishore to explain why the suspension should not be made permanent.
Additionally, criminal contempt proceedings are being considered, and a letter has been sent to the Attorney General seeking permission to initiate legal action.
