New Delhi: The Supreme Court will consider the safety concerns surrounding Delhi's paying guest accommodations and student hostels on September 10 following the deadly building collapse in Satya Niketan that claimed seven lives.

The issue reached the apex court on Tuesday amid calls for a wider and time-bound safety inspection of PG accommodations and private hostels located near colleges and universities across the national capital.

The Supreme Court is already hearing a larger matter concerning unauthorised constructions, violations of building rules and safety concerns. The bench observed that the issues emerging from the Satya Niketan tragedy overlap with the wider case before it.

The court also indicated that it could consider taking over the matter being heard separately by the Delhi High Court, if necessary.

The push for a wider inspection comes after a five-storey building used as a boys' PG accommodation near Delhi University's South Campus collapsed on Sunday. Seven people were killed and five others were injured.

A court-appointed amicus curiae urged the Supreme Court to expand inspections beyond the areas currently under scrutiny and include PGs, private hostels and similar student accommodation facilities across Delhi.

The proposed safety audit could cover structural stability, fire safety, building plans, basement alterations, land-use permissions and emergency entry and exit arrangements.

The Delhi High Court had earlier ordered a high-level inquiry into the collapse, while questioning the role of civic and government authorities in preventing such incidents.
