EAM S Jaishankar to speak in Lok Sabha on the West Asia situation. Over 52,000 Indians evacuated as US-Israel-Iran conflict intensifies.

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar is set to deliver a high-stakes statement in the Lok Sabha this Monday, March 9, addressing the escalating conflict in West Asia. The announcement comes as the second half of the Parliament Budget Session reconvenes amidst a global energy crisis and a deteriorating security situation in the Middle East.
According to the revised list of business circulated on Sunday evening, the Union Minister will provide a comprehensive update on India's stance and the safety of its diaspora in the conflict zone.
Previously, the only major item listed was the opposition-backed resolution seeking the removal of Om Birla as the Lok Sabha Speaker.
However, with the security situation in West Asia remaining precarious, the Opposition has intensified demands for a structured discussion on India's diplomatic and humanitarian response. The government’s decision to lead with a ministerial statement suggests a priority shift toward national security and international relations.
52,000 Indians evacuated amid US-Israel-Iran conflict
The security landscape in West Asia has worsened as the US and Israel continue targeted bombardments of Iranian positions, while Tehran has retaliated with strikes against Israeli assets and US military bases.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been working around the clock to ensure the safety of Indian nationals. Over 52,000 Indians have already successfully returned to India.
Evacuations were made possible following a partial and strategic opening of airspace across the volatile region.
The strategic importance of the statement
India’s interests in West Asia are multifaceted, involving energy security, maritime trade, and the welfare of millions of expatriates. Dr. Jaishankar is expected to clarify India’s diplomatic "middle path" while addressing the domestic impact of the conflict, such as the rising costs of fuel.
