New Delhi: During a session at the Arctic Circle India Forum 2025, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar discussed India’s stance on Europe and the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

S Jaishankar has reiterated India’s preference for partnership based on mutual understanding, while criticising the West for attempting to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict without engaging Moscow.

Jaishankar highlighted the importance of mutuality of interest in any partnership with Europe, particularly when it comes to issues like the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. He stated that India seeks genuine partners, not nations that "preach" without practicing the same principles at home. He added that India expects Europe to engage with sensitivity and understanding.

Jaishankar also criticised the Western approach to the conflict, pointing out that it defied the principles of realism to attempt a solution without involving Russia. He emphasised India’s consistent approach of not prescribing solutions to either side but maintaining dialogue, especially with Russia, due to long-standing ties and the complementarity between the countries as a resource provider and consumer.

He said, “We have always advocated for a Russia realism, which has not been fully understood by the West.” His remarks also addressed the Western critique of India’s decision to maintain strong economic ties with Russia, particularly in the purchase of discounted Russian crude after the invasion of Ukraine. Jaishankar explained that India's actions are driven by national interests, and the predictions about the war from 2022-2023 have proven to be flawed.

While acknowledging Europe’s evolving relationship with India, Jaishankar pointed out that Europe is still grappling with its approach to global issues, including its stance on Russia. "We have always been very open to helping in any way possible to bring about peace," he added.
