Thiruvananthapuram: The Union Ministry of Heavy Industries has begun steps to manufacture neodymium magnets within India, aiming to reduce dependence on imports and boost domestic technology and industry. The plan is to set up multiple production plants across the country by 2027.

Currently, India imports most of its neodymium magnets from China. Neodymium, a rare earth element, is crucial for magnet production. To meet this need, the ministry will extract neodymium oxide (a powder) from monazite, a mineral found in black sand. Mining is planned along the coastal belts of Kollam and Alappuzha in Kerala, with Odisha’s coast also under consideration.

The central government has allocated Rs 1,900 crore for the project. Mining rights have been granted to the Atomic Minerals Department (AMD) under the Ministry of Atomic Energy. The neodymium oxide obtained through mining will then be processed chemically and converted into metal for magnet manufacturing.

Neodymium magnets are essential in wind turbines, electric vehicles, aircraft, healthcare equipment, and mobile phones. They are valued for their strong magnetic power, durability, and energy efficiency. On average, 600 kilograms of these magnets are needed to generate one megawatt of electricity.
