Ghaziabad: A video showing rape accused Sushil Prajapati receiving a celebratory welcome after being released on bail from a jail in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad has triggered widespread outrage on social media.
Prajapati, a former member of the Hindu Yuva Vahini, is accused of raping a law student. He was granted bail and released on May 17 after spending nearly nine months in custody.
Visuals circulating online showed the accused dressed in white clothes and covered with marigold garlands shortly after stepping out of jail.
The footage captured supporters lifting him onto their shoulders, raising slogans and taking out a procession that resembled a victory rally. Several people were seen greeting him with handshakes and smiles as a convoy moved along the road.
In the video, some supporters could also be seen flashing victory signs, while others used their mobile phones to record the celebrations.
Allegations in the case
According to the allegations, the accused had taken the law student to a flat on the pretext of introducing her to a lawyer, where he allegedly raped her.
The matter had led to his arrest, following which he remained in jail for several months before securing bail.
Police looking into viral videos
Police officials said they are examining the viral clips showing supporters showering flowers on the accused and participating in the vehicle procession after his release.
The authorities said an investigation into the videos is currently underway.
