Guwahati: Raijor Dal chief and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi indicated that a formal alliance between his party and the Congress in Assam could be finalised within the next few days, as talks between the two sides have reached an advanced stage.

Speaking about the evolving opposition dynamics in the state, Gogoi said Raijor Dal has consistently supported the idea of joining hands with the Congress to build a stronger front against the ruling BJP ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

According to Gogoi, discussions over seat-sharing and coordination are progressing through dialogue, and both parties are working towards a consensus. He expressed confidence that an official announcement on the alliance would be made soon.

“Positive talks are going on regarding alliance. The Congress has taken a step forward and the ice has melted a little,” he said, signalling movement in negotiations for a broader opposition coalition.

He reiterated that no meaningful opposition alliance can be formed in Assam by sidelining Raijor Dal, underlining the party’s relevance in the state’s political landscape.

Focus on BJP challenge and people-centric issues

Gogoi maintained that the proposed alliance is aimed at consolidating opposition forces to effectively challenge the BJP in the next Assembly polls. He stressed that unity among like-minded parties is essential to protect democratic values and respond to pressing public concerns.

The alliance, he said, would prioritise issues such as unemployment, rising prices, and safeguarding the rights and identity of the people of Assam.

While confirming ongoing dialogue, Gogoi noted that he has not received a direct call from Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, but said senior Congress leader Ripun Bora has been in touch with him regarding the alliance process.

He also revealed that Lurinjyoti Gogoi, president of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), a Congress ally in the state, has been in constant communication. According to Akhil Gogoi, Lurinjyoti Gogoi assured him that Raijor Dal would not be excluded from any opposition arrangement.

“Lurinjyoti Gogoi has clearly conveyed that there will be no alliance without Raijor Dal,” he said, emphasising the need for mutual respect, political space and an issue-based understanding within any coalition framework.

The political climate in Assam has seen intensified activity in recent weeks, with regional and national parties exploring the possibility of forming a united front against the BJP government.

Raijor Dal, which emerged from grassroots movements and mass protests, holds considerable influence in parts of Upper Assam, making it a key player in opposition arithmetic.

With alliance discussions nearing completion, the coming days could shape the contours of a broader opposition strategy in the state ahead of the Assembly elections.
