Kolkata: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during an election rally in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas, alleging that he is being targeted “round the clock” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling party.

Addressing supporters, Gandhi said he has faced multiple legal cases and institutional actions but remains undeterred.

He stated: “Narendra Modi and the BJP target me round the clock. I face 36 cases; my government house has been snatched away. My Lok Sabha membership was cancelled, and I was interrogated for 55 hours straight. But let one thing be clear, I do not fear Narendra Modi.”

Gandhi also criticised the Centre’s economic and foreign policy decisions, alleging that India’s interests were compromised in trade and data-related matters. In another rally in Hooghly, he said: “Narendra Modi made a trade deal with America, in which he sold off India’s agriculture sector, small and medium industry, and energy security.”

He further claimed that unemployment and industrial decline were major issues in West Bengal and accused both the BJP and the state government of poor governance. Referring to corruption allegations, he said: “Narendra Modi is corrupt, but TMC is no less involved in corruption.”

Gandhi also cited past scams while criticising the state administration, alleging financial irregularities and unfulfilled employment promises.

The remarks come after the completion of the first phase of polling in West Bengal, which recorded a high voter turnout of 91.78 per cent, according to the Election Commission of India. The second phase of voting is scheduled for April 29, with counting set for May 4.
