New Delhi: Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani was given a grand ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, marking his second state visit to India. The Emir, who arrived at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is in the country for a two-day visit.

After a formal welcome, Sheikh Tamim and President Droupadi Murmu exchanged greetings and introduced their respective delegations and ministers at Rashtrapati Bhavan. This sets the stage for further discussions on strengthening bilateral ties between India and Qatar.

Sheikh Tamim is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House at noon. The meeting will focus on enhancing the long-standing relationship between the two nations, with key topics of mutual interest expected to be addressed.

Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) exchange

At 1:00 pm, the Emir and Indian officials will participate in the exchange of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), solidifying collaboration across various sectors. These agreements are expected to enhance the partnership between India and Qatar.

In the evening, at 7:00 pm, Sheikh Tamim will meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where the President will host a banquet in his honour.

Ahead of the Emir's visit, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) highlighted the strong historical ties between India and Qatar. "India and Qatar have deep-rooted historical ties of friendship, trust, and mutual respect. In recent years, the ties between the two countries have continued to strengthen across areas such as trade, investment, energy, technology, culture, and people-to-people exchanges," the MEA statement said.

Special welcome at airport

In a special gesture, Prime Minister Modi personally welcomed Sheikh Tamim at the Air Force Station in Palam on Monday evening. The warm embrace shared between the two leaders reflected the strong relationship between India and Qatar.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) posted on X, "A special gesture for a special friend! PM Modi welcomed HH Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, Amir of Qatar, at the airport, as he arrived in New Delhi on his second state visit to India. The visit will further strengthen the bonds of India-Qatar partnership."

The Emir's visit will conclude with his departure from India at 9:05 pm.
