PM Narendra Modi honored Jayalalithaa on Mann Ki Baat, praising her leadership, administrative legacy, and a deep personal friendship.

Chennai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, describing her as a “widely admired and beloved leader” during the 131st episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat.
PM Modi recalled his personal friendship with Jayalalithaa and lauded her contributions to governance, law and order, and women’s empowerment in Indian politics.
“Jayalalithaa was a great leader who was deeply loved by the people. My friendship with her is like a sacred tree in my heart,” the Prime Minister said.
Highlighting her administrative legacy, he noted Jayalalithaa’s decisive leadership and firm measures to maintain law and order in Tamil Nadu, which earned her the trust and admiration of the people.

With her birth anniversary approaching on February 24, PM Modi said the affection of Tamil Nadu’s citizens for Jayalalithaa remains palpable. “Even today, when I travel to Tamil Nadu, I can sense the deep connection the people have with Jayalalithaa. When her name is mentioned, one can see a special spark among the people,” he added.
Recalling his tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister, PM Modi said, “Every meeting and every conversation with Amma Jayalalithaa is still fresh in my mind. She also attended two of my swearing-in ceremonies in Gujarat, in 2002 and 2012. When we were both Chief Ministers of our respective states, we often discussed topics like good governance. Her thinking was crystal clear, and her thoughts were uncluttered. This was a significant characteristic of hers. Many years ago, she invited me to Chennai over lunch on the auspicious occasion of Pongal. That affectionate gesture will remain unforgettable for me.”
PM Modi also acknowledged Jayalalithaa’s support for Gujarat and her devotion to national progress. “She had great devotion to the nation and worked with commitment for its progress,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s remarks take on political significance as Tamil Nadu prepares for the upcoming Assembly elections. The AIADMK-BJP-led National Democratic Alliance has been ramping up political outreach in the state, and PM Modi’s tribute is seen as an effort to connect with Jayalalithaa’s enduring support base.
Fondly called “Amma” by her supporters, Jayalalithaa continues to be a central figure in Tamil Nadu politics, years after her passing.
