New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday reaffirmed India’s consistent position in favour of a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict during a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The call came after President Putin briefed Modi on his recent summit with US President Donald Trump, which took place in Alaska on Friday. The high-stakes meeting between Putin and Trump lasted nearly three hours but concluded without a ceasefire agreement.

Following the conversation, the prime minister took to social media to share details of the exchange.

“Thank my friend, President Putin, for his phone call and for sharing insights on his recent meeting with President Trump in Alaska,” the prime minister said.

“India has consistently called for a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict and supports all efforts in this regard. I look forward to our continued exchanges in the days to come,” he added.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), President Putin shared his assessment of the summit talks with Trump.

“While thanking President Putin, the prime minister underlined India's consistent position for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue. He reiterated that India supports all efforts in this regard,” the PMO said.

The two leaders also discussed a range of bilateral issues, with a view to further strengthening the long-standing Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia.

Friday’s summit marked the first high-level engagement between the US and Russia since Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Saturday welcomed the Alaska summit, commending the efforts made by both leaders.

“India welcomes the Summit meeting in Alaska between US President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin of Russia,” the MEA said.

“Their leadership in the pursuit of peace is highly commendable,” it added.

India has consistently urged for an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.

Last year, PM Modi had travelled to Moscow and told President Putin that the conflict cannot be resolved on the battlefield and that peace efforts cannot succeed amid violence. The following month, he visited Kyiv and conveyed to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that both sides must engage in direct dialogue without delay.

Since the outset of the war, Modi has maintained that India stands firmly on the side of peace.
