New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday attended Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister L Murugan in the national capital. He sent a message of warmth and goodwill to citizens across India, extending greetings on the harvest festivals of Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu, and Pongal.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the Prime Minister described these festivals as symbols of hope, positivity, and community spirit. He noted that while Sankranti is celebrated in diverse ways across the country, it is observed with the same enthusiasm and joy nationwide.

Highlighting the significance of the festival for farmers, PM Modi said it is an occasion to express gratitude to those who feed the nation through their hard work.

Regarding Magh Bihu, the Prime Minister described the Assamese harvest festival as a celebration of joy, warmth, and brotherhood, marking the end of the harvest season in Magh. He acknowledged the contributions of farmers and wished peace, good health, and success for all. The festival is traditionally celebrated with community feasts, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Assam.

On the occasion of Pongal, PM Modi greeted citizens with a “Vanakkam,” emphasising the festival’s role in honouring agriculture, rural life, and the dignity of labour. He said Pongal strengthens social bonds, brings families together, and celebrates the enduring connection between humans and nature. Calling it a symbol of Tamil traditions, the Prime Minister also highlighted India’s pride in the Tamil language, one of the oldest in the world.

These harvest festivals, including Lohri, Uttarayan, Sankranti, Magh Bihu, and Pongal, showcase the diversity of India’s cultural and agricultural heritage.

Lohri celebrations in northern India, for instance, are marked by bonfires, traditional foods, and folk songs, adding warmth and joy to the festive season.
