False claims about Lt. Gen Kumar's removal refuted by PIB Fact Check

New Delhi: Amid a wave of misinformation following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Government of India has issued a clarification debunking rumours surrounding the departure of Lieutenant General M.V. Suchindra Kumar as head of the Northern Command. Several social media accounts, particularly pro-Pakistan handles, had falsely claimed that Lt Gen Kumar was removed from his position due to alleged internal fallout after the attack.
The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit categorically rejected these claims, labelling them as fake. In a post on X, the official handle of PIB Fact Check clarified that Lt Gen M.V. Suchindra Kumar is retiring on April 30 upon reaching superannuation, a standard practice within the Indian Army's service regulations.
The PIB also confirmed that Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, currently the Deputy Chief of Army Staff (Strategy), will take over as the new General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Udhampur-based Northern Command on May 1. His appointment was approved by the government prior to the Pahalgam incident, thereby refuting any claims of an abrupt change linked to the terror attack or political dissatisfaction.

The transition comes during heightened security and diplomatic tensions, especially following the April 22 attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley, which claimed 26 lives. While conspiracy theories gained traction online alleging a failed "false flag" operation and the purported arrest of Gen Kumar, Indian authorities have neither confirmed such claims nor suggested any disciplinary action against the outgoing commander.
Lt Gen Pratik Sharma, known for his operational experience across various terrains and conflicts, is set to lead the Northern Command, which oversees operations along the Pakistan and China borders in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh. His past assignments include leading key operations such as Pawan, Meghdoot, and Parakram, and holding senior positions like Director General of Military Operations and Information Warfare.
The Army has remained silent on the speculative narratives but sources indicate that the transition is part of the routine military leadership cycle, devoid of any disciplinary context. The PIB’s intervention is part of a broader effort to counter the spread of disinformation at a time when military matters are under increased scrutiny due to regional instability.
This clarification aims to put to rest the unfounded allegations and underscores the Indian Army’s continued emphasis on operational continuity and leadership discipline amidst volatile cross-border developments.
